In the Skills of Time [Vibration One], by Ana Lira

Sep 17 2022 – Feb 26 2023

Sponsored by Petrobras, the participatory exhibition In the Skills of Time [Vibration One] proposes experiences of creation and freedom based on the music of Black and Indigenous traditions. The project by artist and curator Ana Lira, chooses the drum as a central instrument to generate experiences of celebration and community actions, pointing to relations between the Brazilian territory and the sonorities that emerge from each place.

The work takes place within an arena with stands, activated throughout the exhibition by the artist, educators and other guests. In it, an atabaque drum, a timbal drum and an ashiko drum, made in a partnership between the artist and the Instituto do Tambor, make reference to the states of Pernambuco, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, and function as activation elements with the public. The arena also holds instruments from the collections of Caboclinho 7 Flechas, Didá, Ilê Ayê, Escola de Samba Beija-Flor and Jongo da Serrinha, with whom the artist dialogued during the trajectory of the experience and whose percussive sonorities are a transmutation reference. These instruments bear the marks of their presence in parades, festivities and rituals, and celebrate the production of knowledge of the communities to which they belong.

Along with the instruments, a free radio serves as a platform for discussions and actions by guest musicians, with participation of the public. Part of the recordings made during the exhibition period will be published online.

Ana Lira’s artistic production is focused on the relations between culture and ways of life based on collective work practices. The interest in the circulation of languages, communication systems and popular manifestations is a constant in her work.

The participatory exhibition project invites you to reflect on how rhythms help create communities throughout the history of Brazil.
