SUPERNOVA UÝRA: WE ARE HERE
Different voices, each with its own rhythm and timbre. Different faces, traits, names and stories. But they all refer to the same reality: that of the originary peoples of the territory that we know as Brazil. WE ARE HERE, a solo exhibition by UÝRA, gathers multiple stories of indigenous people in the diaspora, told through sounds, images and narratives rooted in the exhibition space.
In contrast to the historical erasures and those that still happen in the present, the people who appear in WE ARE HERE bring rarely told stories and reaffirm their position in the world. Their way of existing is, at the same time, individual and collective, and catalyses both the acts of recognising and belonging.
Resulting from research, contacts and encounters carried out by the artist in various regions of Brazil, the works in the exhibition begin an exercise of mapping and creation of connections between indigenous people, mainly in urban contexts, through ties of kinship built from the land and from the gatherings made possible by the waters.
UÝRA is a visual artist, researcher, educator, has a masters in Ecology and was born in Santarém (PA). She is an indigenous person who fights for the repossession of lands. Through a deep relationship with the territory, she creates material manifestations of indigenous presence, either based on her own identity or in connection to other indigenous people with whom she works. Her work presents a search for collective self-esteem and the continuity of life, bringing forth the diverse experiences of indigenous people with space, memory and time, stimulating connections and the creation of bonds.
Opening on December 11, 2022, International Human Rights Day, WE ARE HERE is the third exhibition of Supernova, a program of individual exhibitions at MAM Rio that offers a platform for the production of contemporary art throughout the Brazilian territory.
