Creating an accessible museum

The Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro realises a series of accessibility activities for its audiences, both in its educational programming and in its exhibitions.

Residência Incluir (Include Residency) is a project aimed exclusively at people with disabilities, who are interested in participating in the museum’s activities and routines, together with the MAM Rio team. The aim is to familiarise people with the professional context of the museum in an educational and professionalising process and, at the same time, to expand the museum’s inclusion practices and strengthen the dialogue with the public and the city, based on proposals developed by the residents.

The Accessible Visits video series uses assistive technologies and visual resources to present exhibitions in Brazilian Sign Language (Libra), with audio and subtitles in Portuguese. And the annual Accessibility in Dialogue conference creates a space for discussion between artists, educators and cultural professionals, sharing experiences for new approaches to the museum’s programming.

In its exhibitions, MAM Rio enables the participation of blind or visually impaired people through audio descriptions of works from the collection and in the exhibition space. In addition, the production of tactile pieces for the exhibitions, both of works of art and the exhibition space itself, increases accessibility of the museum experience. This year, ArtRio audiences are invited to see some examples of these technologies.

In 2024, MAM Rio received the Outstanding Museum Practice Award from the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) for its accessibility programme.
