Samba School: A Tree That Forgot Its Roots, 2026

This installation pays homage to figures who are essential to the samba schools and Carnival, despite not often being known to the general public. The people referenced in the work are related to different groups and represent the collectivity that shapes the creative process of the festival, as well as the relationships between tradition, body and territory that originate and sustain it.

The title of this work was inspired by a book by samba musician Antônio Candeia Filho and Isnard Araújo: Escola de samba: árvore que esqueceu a raiz (Samba School: A Tree That Forgot Its Roots). The book refers to a recurring element in the parades – trees and their roots –, which functions as a metaphor for the memories that sustain the celebration.
