Gê Viana often works with photomontage, articulating sets of images that she finds or creates, in order to present reflections on the construction of Brazilian iconography. By appropriating historical images, she manipulates her compositions and includes external elements. The Maranhão state artist challenges hegemonic narratives, bringing new interpretations of the past.
The Couro laminado (Laminated Leather) series, 2022, emerges from the understanding that popular celebrations are closely related to the struggle for rights and the search for emancipation in Maranhão. For its composition, Gê Viana turns to the Balaiada Revolt (1838-1841), whose name alludes to the weaving technique, led by Black and Indigenous populations linked to rural work. The artist makes use of leather, material present in different spheres of Maranhão culture, from clothing to religion and music. The work reflects on the relations between rebellion, collectivity and technologies for sustaining life.
