MAM Rio: origin and construction

MAM Rio: origin and construction presents the history of the creation of the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, starting with its conception and culminating in the inauguration of its purpose-built building, at the Aterro do Flamengo. A selection of approximately 160 documents reflect the ideas and intentions that shaped the museum, the people who contributed to or accompanied its creation, and the design and construction of its iconic building, conceived by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy and realised along with engineer and urban planner Carmen Portinho between 1954 and 1967.

Presenting these processes to our publics, in the year in which MAM Rio celebrates its 75th anniversary, aims to encourage critical thinking about cultural institutions, and investigate how they respond to places and moments, changing throughout time.

Documents from the museum’s archive, with additions from the Museus Castro Maya archive, occupy tables that serve both as a space for meetings and workshops as well as an area for reading and consulting publications, or for the visitors to take a rest. The books that are part of the exhibition are copies of titles from the museum’s library about issues related to MAM Rio and its history.

MAM Rio: origin and construction is part of the Libraries in Network – Reading Laboratory project, which aims to increase access to the MAM Rio Library, expanding its reach and carrying out restoration, indexing, cataloguing and digitalisation services of the library collection.
